IRTS 80 metres Counties Contest

The IRTS 80 metres counties contest was held on New Year's Day. Band conditions were favourable - low noise levels and good local propagation at least for the first two hours; as darkness fell, some contesters had to contend with strong signals from continental European stations.

The contest was well supported by Irish and British stations. Most EI and GI counties were heard, although some Midland counties such as Carlow, Laois and Offaly did not feature in any of our correspondents' logs. Despite the inclement weather, at least four stations operated portable: Shannon Basin Radio Club (EI3Z) were on Cairn Hill in Longford, two portable stations were in County Cork: Avondhu Radio Club (EI1E) in Watergrasshill and Dave EI9FBB, who was on Bweeng, near Mallow. We also heard Joe EI7GY, operating from a site near Glenmalure in County Wicklow.
