IRTS AGM, Dinner and Radio Rally

This year the 81st IRTS AGM is hosted by Shannon Basin Radio Club. The event takes place in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel in Athlone, Saturday April 27th and Sunday April 28th 2013. Tickets for the Dinner on Saturday night (8.00 for 8.30pm) will be available at 30 Euro each from Brian EI8IU QTHR and through IRTS Committee Members. Dress code, as usual, is smart/casual. EI13CLAN

EI13CLAN will be QRV from the shack of EI4GXB for the CQ WPX contest next weekend. Operators include a group of young op's, and a visiting operator from Lithuania.


Youngsters On The Air

During the summer of 2013, a youth radio camp "Youngsters On The Air" will be held near Tartu, Estonia from 5-12 August. There will be 10 teams participating from different European member associations of IARU R1. The camp is organised by the Estonian Radio Amateurs Union. During this week teams of young radio amateurs from 10 different European countries will be participating in different activities: presentations, Contests, visiting radio stations, observatory, etc. Young operators or SWL's aged between 14-25, are being sought to represent Ireland, and should contact Ger McNamara, IRTS Youth Co-ordinator on 087 2532512 or by email to ei4gxb /at/ gmail.com

As two previous events in Romania and Belgium/Netherlands have shown, it will be a great experience for the young hams which they will never forget.


South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

The next monthly meeting of the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will take place in the Roanmore Social and Sports Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford on Monday the 25th March at 8.30 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by a committee meeting at 8.00 pm sharp. New members are very welcome. South Dublin Radio Club

This years South Dublin Radio Club AGM will take place on Tuesday 26th of March. All members are asked to attend.


Cork Radio Club

The March meeting of Cork Radio Club will be held on Tuesday next March 26th at the Community Centre in Carrigtwohill. Dave Deane EI9FBB will give an illustrated talk on his recent trip to Uganda as part of the 5X8C DXpedition team. Plans for the trip to Brow Head, near Crookhaven in West Cork for International Marconi Day will be finalised at the meeting. The club will once again operate EI5IMD from the exact spot on Brow Head where Marconi established his famous station in 1901.Club members Jeremy EI5GM and Dave EI9FBB activated Bere Island on the recent bank holiday Monday making several hundred QSOs on both CW and SSB from the eastern end of the island alongside the fort. CW Field Day will be operated as part of a weekend club outing to Baltimore over the June bank holiday weekend. New members are always very welcome at the club meetings.


South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

EI8GQB/EI1A Activation

EI8GQB/EI1A will be active between 23rd March and 3rd April.Olivier ON4EI will operate EI8GQB/EI1A from a caravan using green energy. He will activate EI1A call sign during the CQ WPX SSB contest (30-31st March). More detail on www.qrz.com/db/EI8GQB


Mid Ulster Amateur Radio Club

The Mid Ulster Amateur Radio Club will be holding the next Foundation Amateur Radio Licence course on Friday and Saturday April 12th and 13th. The course takes place at the Place Resource Centre, 1b Ardress Park, Portadown. More details from www.muarc.com


Nicholas Joseph Callan

January 2014 is the 150th anniversary of the death of Father Nicholas Joseph Callan, (1799-1864). Nicholas Callan, a Louth man, was an Irish priest and scientist at Maynooth College, County Kildare. He was professor of Natural Philosophy,(now known as Physics) and he is best known for his work on the induction coil which was the world’s first transformer.
