IRTS 2 Metres Counties Contest

The IRTS 2m Counties Contest will take place Sunday 28th August 2011. The closing date for the submission of the log to the contest manager is 27th September 2011.


IRTS SSB Field Day

The IRTS SSB Field Day takes place Saturday 3rd September and Sunday 4th September 2011. The closing date for the submission of the log is October 4th 2011.


GI HF Conference

The West Tyrone Amateur Radio Club (WTARC) Omagh are holding a HF Conference on Saturday 20th August 2011. This Conference comes following the very successful DigiCon 09 Conference back in September 2009.

A range of speakers from around GI, EI and G will be in attendance to share their various perspectives on aspects of HF operation. There will also be in attendance Traders such as, Tyrone Amateur Electronics (TAE) and JBT (Jim Bob) along with exhibits from the RSGB and the IRTS.

London 2012’s critical communications ready for service

Airwave, the leading provider of critical voice and data communications to public service organisations in the UK, has announced that the private mobile radio (PMR) service infrastructure for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games is ready for service. The PMR network, named Apollo, will provide voice communications for over 18,000 staff and volunteers from the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) during the 2012 Games. Apollo has been purpose-built to provide mobile radio to all London 2012 competition venues from the Olympic Park itself to sites across the country from Glasgow and Manchester to Coventry and Weymouth. The stand-alone network is now ready for operation and will be used by Games staff and volunteers, from stewards and security personnel to anti-doping officials, from now until December 2012. RSGB Amateur Radio survey released

The results of the RSGB Amateur Radio survey are now available. It shows the Amateur population is continuing to age with a typical RSGB member now being about 65. The survey also shows that just 1.97% are women and only 0.88% classify themselves as being from an ethnic group other than White or White British a figure closer to 13% might have been expected. EU-136, 9A, Kvarner group: 9A8ASN will be active from Cres Island from Jul 13-30. QSL via IK5ASN (bureau/direct).

EU-172, OZ, Jylland East & Fyn group: OZ/DL4FO is going to hit the airwaves from Tunoe (DIA JY-009) mainly in CW on the HF bands and 6m from Jul 17-29. Tunoe is situated west of Samsoe and is a small island of only 3,52 sqkm. QSL via bureau to his homecall. See also: www.qslnet.de/dl4fo

NA-091, VE, British Columbia Province South group: Broughton Island has a confirmation rate of only 22 %. Broughton is the workplace and QTH of VE7RSV/p. When Rob has some time he is working in SSB with 100 watts and G5RV almost every day. He wants to take part in IOTA Contest also. QSL via homecall. NA-142, W, Florida State North West (Escambia to Walton County) group: This quite rare IOTA group will be activated by W4/DF2MM from Santa Rosa (aka Okaloosa) between Jul 18 and Aug 25. NA-232, KL7, St Matthew Island: It seems like everything is on "go" for a first time activity from St. Matthew from Jul 19-22. If the weather is fine and condx good N3QQ and NL8F want to make around 3000 QSOs signing KL7RRC/p. They will work with high power in CW and SSB on 40m-10m. OC-187, VK, Queensland State (North Coast) North group: JE1SCF will activate Lizard as KU2F/VK4 from Jul 18-22. QSL via JE1SCF (bureau/direct).

The North Cork Radio Group

The North Cork Radio Group is pleased to announce their second annual rally and electronics fair at the Blarney Golf Resort, Tower, Co Cork. on Sunday September the 11th 2011.

DX News

The Republic of Southern Sudan became an independent state on 9 July. At the time of writing DXers are waiting for the first amateur radio signals from this new DXCC entity. At least two teams are poised ready to deal with the huge pileups which can be expected on all bands in the coming days.

Another new one – this time for the IOTA chasers – will be KL7RRC operated by Yuri N3QQ and Tim NL8F from the Alaskan island of St Matthew, They hope to be QRV from 19-22 July and the new Islands on the Air reference is NA-232. Dates are subject to change depending on the local weather. QSLs go via N7RO.

Eric SM1TDE will be active from Eckero in the Aland Islands using the callsign OH0/SM1TDE from 21-24 July. He plans to be 2khz up from the band edges on 80-10m CW.

A large group of Italian operators will sign IM0P from San Pietro Island in the Mediterranean from 22 July till 2 August. This island counts as EU-165 for the Islands on the Air Award. During their stay there they hope to active several other smaller islands in the area.
