People may be interested in a new type of Amateur Radio Map which is freely available on EI8IC's website. The map is of use to all amateurs, whether HF or VHF based.
The problem with ordinary web-based and digital maps is that there is either too little or too much information on the screen. Tim EI8IC just completed a map of Europe, the first in a series of Overlay Maps, where the user can choose the amount and type of information displayed.
Any or all of the following details can be selected by the user; Country Outlines, CQ Zones, ITU Zones, Time Zones, Grid Locators, Country Names, Capital Cities, Prefixes and Flags.
The map can be saved in the normal manner for viewing off-line, and it can be printed using only the selected detail.
As the page is graphics-intensive (220kb) it takes approximately 30 seconds to load with a 56 kb modem, or 1 minute over a 28.2 kb connection. A pre-loader page is provided as an entry point. The address is www.qsl.net/ei8ic/grids/euro/preload.html or it can be accessed through the normal menu on EI8IC's website.
Tim would welcome any comments or suggestions for other maps.
Keep an ear open next weekend during the IOTA contest for Irish Islands on the air. There will be a few islands activated for the contest. One of the groups going is a mixture of three different clubs. EI2SDR ( South Dublin Radio Club), EI7DAR ( Dundalk Amateur Radio Society) and GN0XYZ (Glengormley Radio Club) have put together a team of 20 and are going to Inishboffin off the coast of Galway and will be using the call EJ5E. Those of you interested in W.A.I. the square will be L56 Galway. The team will be active on 80,40,20,15 and 10m during the contest on both SSB and CW, so please give us a call. We will also be active on 2m and 6m before and after the contest.
Paul EI6FE apologises to all that he has not yet been able to operate from M40 Co. Clare as promised some time ago. He has not forgotten about this rare square but has been waiting for the weather to clear up. Any good weekend so far has clashed with domestic duties. He still intends to activate this square. There will be plenty of advance notice of the operation.
