IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday September 26th 1999.

Region 1 Conference

The Conference has now concluded and the delegates have by and large returned to their home countries. At time of writing word has been received that Paul EI5DI has been elected Chairman of the Region 1 Contest Sub Committee. This is an honour for EI as Paul is the first representative from this country to Chair any Committee of Region 1. We extend congratulations to Paul on his election and wish him well with his work.

Other news from the Conference concerned a proposal to amalgamate the SSB and CW Field Days. A number of delegations were concerned at the drop in support for these contests in recent years. However, following discussion, it was decided to continue with separate Con tests. Although the discussion on CW as a requirement for access to the HF Bands was scheduled for later in the week, the IRTS policy paper referred to in last weeks Radio News was circulated to the other delegations.

The report received from Paul and Dave was very positive in tone but did mention one problem. Beer is £8 a pint!!!!

South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

The next general meeting of the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will take place on Wednesday next (29th) in the Roanmore GAA Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford.

The meeting will feature a demonstration of the WITIP packet telnet gateway. All members are asked to attend and visitors are most welcome. Meetings of the Group will continue on the last Wednesday of each month while Committee Meetings will take place on the first Wednesday.

Special Event Station

To coincide with the Waterford Opera Festival a Special Event Station has been on the air since Tuesday last and will continue until Sunday October 3rd. The station, using the call-sign EI2WOF may be heard on 80, 40 and 20 metres in the mornings and evenings. A special QSL card is available via Frankie EI4HW.

Tipperary Amateur Radio Group

On Wednesday week (October 6th) John EI3DIB will present a demonstration of Packet Radio. This will include the WIT Internet 'wormhole' and the Packet Cluster using the Tipperary BBS on 2 metres. The meeting will be held at the Raheen House Hotel, Raheen Road, Clonmel at 8 p.m. and the Club extends a welcome to everybody interested to attend.

North Dublin Radio Club

The North Dublin Radio Club will hold an Exhibition on Amateur Radio in the Raheny Library during the month of October. The objective of the Exhibition is to promote Amateur Radio in general and the Club's Theory classes in particular. All aspects of the hobby will be covered with emphasis on the visual - charts, maps, photographs and posters. Although no demonstration facilities are available in the library, NDR and the Bayside Scouts Radio Group will set up demonstration stations on Saturdays in the Scouts Den and Chanel College to which the public will be invited.

IOTA

The RSGB IOTA Committee is moving towards a policy of requiring the island name to appear on all QSL cards claimed for credit. At present the relevant rule states "QSL cards submitted should bear an island/group name or other indication of an island QTH". It is anticipated that from next year the "should" in the rule will become "must". Many EIs already carry the IOTA reference EU-115 on their QSL cards and can rest easy about the rule change. However, those who do not, should bear in mind the fact that their cards might not qualify for IOTA credit from next year. Be sure to add that IOTA reference EU-115 the next time you have cards printed.
