IRTS Committee Meeting

An IRTS Committee Meeting will be held in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel in Athlone on Saturday next March the 13th at 1100 am. Please note that the incorrect start time was mentioned in recent bulletins.

Islands on the Air results

The results of the Islands on the Air contest held at the end of July last were announced recently. As usual, there was good EI participation with two groups making it into the top ten in the Island multi-operator section.

The Dalkey Island Group made the trip to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands and using the callsign WP2Z finished in eight position. A full report on their activities appeared in the recent Newsletter. The East Cork Group travelled to Bere Island, the location normally used by the Dalkey Island gang and finished in tenth position. South Dublin Radio Club made a first entry in this section and finished in 47th position. In the Island 24 hour single operator mixed section, Paul EI5DI finished in sixth position. In the island 24 hour single operator SSB section, Mike EI2IB finished in 14th place while Anthony EI2HY made it to 27th place.

Other EI station listed in the results include Ken EI4DW, fifteenth in the 12 hour mixed section and Martin EI8GP, fifteenth in 12 hour CW section. Congratulations to all involved and we look forward to this years event which takes place over the weekend of July 24th and 25th. Plans are already in place for expeditions to both Bere Island and the Aran Islands.

South Dublin AGM

The annual general meeting of the South Dublin Radio Club took place on Tuesday 23rd February. The opportunity was taken to plan a number of activities for the coming year. As usual with SDR, some of these will take place on mountain tops.

The following committee was elected for the year: Chairman: Jim Holohan, EI4HH Secretary: Tommy Griffin, EI9BTB Treasurer: Brendan de hOra, EI3GV

Other committee members elected were: Eoin O'Cleary EI9HZ, Nicholas Cummins EI5FLB and Peter Henshaw, EI1362

SDR's first outing of the year will be on Sunday 20th March, when members hope to activate a number of squares in County Leitrim.

WAI Activity

There was a lot of activity on the WAI frequencies over last weekend. On Saturday there was a group of stations on the new 40m frequency of 7.068MHz and one Scottish station got his last county for his WEIC award when a Kilkenny station came on frequency. On Sunday John EI7IQ activated squares in both Mayo and Sligo. The DX de OK1AVY: 14010.0 R1ANF 2229Z Mayo squares qualify for both the Worked All Ireland and also the Worked All Mayo awards. All 23 stations taking part in the net were delighted when John activated G41 Mayo. This tiny area has never been activated before. John activated the squares on both 80m and 40m. It is expected that there will be a mobile out today in Northern Ireland. Listen on 7.068MHz and 3.680MHz.

VK6 Island activity

There will be two Irish amateurs among the crew of a DXpedition to Woody Island, IOTA reference OC-170, from March the 14th to the 21st and they will be particularly looking out for Echo India stations. The two in question are John Coleman VK6NU and Tim Jones VK6EI/EI4HL. The group will operate both SSB and CW from four HF stations and will operate as close as possible to the recognised IOTA frequencies. QSL manager for the event is Neil VK6NE. Bureau cards will of course be accepted.

U.S. Special Event to mark St. Patrick's Day

W4S from Savannah, Georgia will be on for the week of 13th to the 20th March (starting 1700Z 13 March and ending 1700Z 20 March) as a special event station to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. It is sponsored by the Coastal Amateur Radio Society, and the frequencies are 14.265, 21.315 and 28.415 MHz. QSL to CARS, PO Box 23972, Savannah, GA 31403, USA.

Looking ahead

The annual EI Activity Day will be held on Sunday March 21st and stations planning activity are asked to advise the news team as soon as possible. The Limerick Radio Club Rally takes place on the same day at the Limerick Inn on the Ennis Road in Limerick. Doors open at 12 noon and further information can be had from Paul EI6FE on 061-360122. The IRTS 2 metre Counties Contest takes place on Easter Monday April the 5th from 1400 to 1600 UTC. The IRTS AGM and Dinner dance will be held in Dundalk over the weekend of April 24/25th.
