JY1 Silent Key
As you will have seen or heard on all the radio and TV news bulletins, King Hussein of Jordan, JY1 finally lost his long battle against non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a form of cancer, on Sunday last the 7th February. JY1 was on the air up to a few weeks ago and a few EI stations had contacts with him while he was undergoing treatment in the United States. Congratulations to Bernie EI6AX who got major coverage on the both the Press and TV for his contacts with JY1.

Mayo Radio Experimenters Network
Over eighty people attended the Wishing Well, Ballyvary, for the Mayo Radio Experimenters Network's public demonstration of Amateur radio on February 3rd. The club station, EI7MRE, was active on eighty meters SSB and on CW on forty and twenty meters. Several DX Stations were logged during the demonstration. Visitors from all over the county enjoyed the demonstration, and several licensed amateurs travelled from neighbouring counties, as well as one from the USA, for the event. Night classes in theory and regulations have commenced in Kiltimagh, with ten students enrolled for the course. The instructors are John Corless, EI7IQ and John McDonnell, EI6IR. The course will run to mid May, when it is hoped to stage the ODTR examination in the county.
EI Activity Day
This year, St. Patrick's Day falls on a Wednesday and from experience it is felt that the annual EI activity day should be held on the Sunday following. Accordingly, all EI's are asked to make a special effort to get on the bands on Sunday March the 21st and clubs or groups are asked to consider activating some of the rarer counties. There is still considerable overseas interest in the Worked All EI Counties Award and the Activity Day has been advertised widely in the overseas amateur radio press. South Dublin Radio Club have indicated their intention of travelling to County Leitrim for the event. Hopefully, the day will also be used to activate squares for the Worked All Ireland Award. Anyone planning any activity is asked to let the news team know of their plans.
