International Marconi Day

This year, International Marconi Day will be held on April the 25th which is actually the date of Marconi's birthday. Once again we expect a lot of activity from Echo India.

Members of the Kerry Wireless Group will be active again this year using the special callsign EI6YXQ from the original Marconi site in Ballybunion.

Marconi's association with Ballybunion is well known, as the first wireless telephonic communication was made from east to west in March 1919 between Ballybunion and Louisbourg, Cape Breton in Nova Scotia.

The Kerry Wireless Group will be assisted this year by members of the Kerry Sea Scouts under their leader Brian O'Daly EI4GL.

Further details on this special event station from John EI6AH QTHR.

The Marconi site at Crookhaven in WestCork will be activated using the callsign EI5IMD by Anthony EI2HY, Mike EI2IB and Albert EI7II.

Campbell Island ZL9

The Kermadec DX Association who brought you the very successful DXpedition to Raoul Island, Kermadecs under the callsign ZL8RI is pleased to inform you that plans are now at an advanced stage for the January 1999 DXpedition to Campbell Island ZL9.

The necessary permissions have been obtained, transport arranged and the logistics needed to put together an operation from this remote island are well in hand.

An international team of operators has been assembled from New Zealand, Japan, Canada, The United States and Ireland. Declan Craig EI6FR is the European member of the team and is, we believe, the first EI ever to be an operator on a major DXpedition.

The operation should be QRV on January 9th 1999 and remain on air until January 25th, allowing plenty of time for the DXer's worldwide to enjoy a QSO with Campbell on many bands and modes. The team will operate on SSB/CW/RTTY and on all bands.

The team leader Ken Holdum ZL2HU has previously written to major DX clubs worldwide seeking their financial support for this DXpedition which is costing in the region of US$65,000 to mount.

If you feel you would like to contribute to the success of the ZL9 DXpedition by helping to meet the enormous costs it would be very much appreciated by the team and by your fellow DXer's worldwide who will enjoy working the DXpedition.

Donations can by sent to Declan Craig EI6FR QTHR. All donations will be acknowledged on receipt and in the event of the DXpedition not proceeding will be returned.

IRTS AGM

The IRTS AGM will be held over the weekend of April the 18th and 19th in Jury's Hotel in Cork. Tickets for the Dinner costing 19.00 are now available and all information on both tickets and accommodation availability can be got from Dick EI6HH on 021-545154.

On the Sunday, the rally and the AGM itself will also be held in Jury's. Anyone wishing to book a table at the rally should contact Con EI7DJB at 021-270136 as soon as possible.

A leaflet has been distributed with the current newsletter which details bed and breakfast establishments near Jury's and also has a map of Cork City to help you find the venue.

Frank Lewis EI2VBV/W3JGM

Frank Lewis EI2VBV/W3JGM is currently visiting Ireland for what we believe is the 35th time and will be spending most of his visit in the Mid-west and the in south of the country.

This is a very special visit for Frank who will celebrate his 80th birthday on April the 6th. Congratulations Frank from your many friends in EI.

EI Activity Day

The Annual EI Activity Day was once again held on Tuesday last St. Patrick's Day and early reports suggest a record number of EI stations on the bands.

The WAI frequency on 80 metres was busy all day and both 20 and 15 meters carried a lot of EI traffic. 15 metres in particular seemed to be very good and several EI station were running pile-ups to North America up to around 2100.

Anthony EI2HY ran the special event callsign EI5SPD from Cork City and reported a very busy day on the air.

Dayton Hamvention

EI visitors to the Dayton Hamvention are reminded that the Irish Hour Group and their friends meet at 3 pm on Friday and Saturday afternoon at the Buckeye Belles/YLRL booth, location C11 near the large indoor food concession.

You may also check in or leave a message at the outdoor flea market, space number 2932 and meet Kay EI7HQ/WA0WOF and her husband Mike W0XM, both frequent visitors to Ireland.

An informal dinner is planned for Saturday evening at one of the local restaurants. Check with Mike or Kay for details.
