IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday April 7th, 2024


News from the IRTS

The Irish Radio Transmitters Society's 91st AGM Weekend takes place next weekend, April 13th and 14th. The event which is being hosted by the Shannon Basin Radio Club will take place in the Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. The weekend will feature workshop type talks on Saturday afternoon and the IRTS Gala Dinner on Saturday evening. On Sunday, the SBRC radio rally and monster raffle takes place from 10 a.m. and the weekend’s activities conclude with the 2024 IRTS AGM on Sunday afternoon which starts at 3 p.m. A small number of gala dinner tickets remain and anyone who may want one is asked to get in touch with Anthony EI6GGB immediately please. All fully paid-up members of the IRTS are welcome and encouraged to attend the 2024 AGM on the Sunday afternoon. Everyone in the IRTS looks forward to meeting friends both old and new over the weekend and wish the SBRC the best of luck hosting the event.

For anyone who may be joining or renewing their membership of the IRTS, please take note of the following. For those who wish to pay by cheque or postal order, please ensure that the cheque or postal order is made payable to the Irish Radio Transmitters Society and don’t just use the initials IRTS. This is to follow guidelines that are in place in our bank. People are encouraged to use the PayPal method to pay membership fees but for anyone that wishes to use cheque or postal please make sure the payable to name is correct. If not, cheques or postal orders cannot be accepted by our bank and will be return to the sender for correction.


South Eastern Amateur Radio Group EI2WRC - Special Event Station

EI150IMD is the special event call which will be activated by members of the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group EI2WRC to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Guglielmo Marconi. The call will be activated by members of the group between April 25th and December 31st. The special event station will be active from Rosslare, Co. Wexford, Ireland on International Marconi Day, April 27th. Marconi established a wireless transmitting station on the site where Marconi House now stands in Rosslare in 1901. A special QSL card is available for anyone that makes contact with the EI150IMD call. The club extends a special thanks to the Cornish Radio Amateur Club G4CRC for planning and organising this great event again this year. 150th Anniversary of Marconi

Continuing with the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Marconi, the special station "Marconiana" IY1EY is operational until next Sunday April 14th. The special event station is using SSB, CW, and digital modes on all HF bands from 80m to 10m. The Marconian special prefix will be active simultaneously on multiple bands and modes. Points can be collected by working the station across the modes and bands. You can then claim an award when a minimum of 20 points has been gathered.


Galway Radio Experimenters Club Update

Members of Galway Radio Experimenters club were again ready to assist the university College Galway mountaineering cub in the running of the 2024 Maam Turk walk in Connemara on Saturday April 6th. However, due to storm Kathleen, the event was cancelled on safety grounds. GREC has been performing this service yearly since 1991. This is only the fourth time that the event has not run since 1975. GREC will be holding their next meeting on Monday 8th of April in the Menlo Park hotel, Galway at 8pm. Visitors and new licensees are welcome to come along.


EIDX Group Returns Home from Lesotho

The EIDX Group returned safely from their 7P8EI trip to Lesotho last Sunday with over 50,000 QSOs in the log. Despite the poor band conditions, they were delighted to get so many EIs and GIs in the log. The group will be giving a presentation at next week’s IRTS AGM weekend talks in Ballinasloe. They will be soon talking bookings for their annual DX Féile event to be held this year on October 5th in the Temple Gate hotel in Ennis.


Maritime Radio Day 2024

The annual Maritime Radio Day takes place next week on the 14th and 15th of April to commemorate almost 100 years of wireless telegraphy service for seafarers. It commences at 12:00 UTC on the 14th and finishes at 23:00 UTC on the 15th. For more information, you can visit www.radioofficers.com/mrd-2024/


Rally Reminders

Shannon Basin Radio Club's rally and monster raffle featuring over twenty-five traders and clubs as well as approximately €3000 in prizes from fifteen sponsors takes place next Sunday April 14th. Radios, shack equipment, tools, and vouchers are up for grabs. Among the prizes is a Cushcraft top band vertical antenna sponsored by Shannon Basin Radio Club which will enable the lucky winner to join in on topband DX activities. The venue is the Shearwater Hotel in Ballinasloe, Co. Galway as part of the 2024 IRTS AGM weekend. Doors will open at 10.00 a.m. and admission will be €5. Lough Erne Amateur Radio Club’s 40th rally takes place on Sunday 5th May 2024. The venue is the Share Discovery Village located at 221 Lisnaskea Rd, Lisnaskea, Enniskillen BT92 0JZ. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and admission is five euro or five pound which includes a ticket for the draw on the day.
