Silent Keys
Eddie Lawler EI6GU passed away suddenly on the 27th August 2019, at his home in Primrose St Dublin. Eddie was a member of the Fingal Radio Club. He was well known on the East coast repeaters during the late 80s and 90s. Although not very active in the last few years he was always willing to help out with parts that were difficult to obtain and had a great collection of older ICs which at times were in great demand by those who enjoyed building projects. May we express our sincere sympathies to his family and may he rest in peace.
It is with the greatest of sympathy we also report the death of John McAndrew, (EI3JM) Ballinvoy, Aughagower, Westport , Co Mayo, Monday September 9th 2019. John operated mostly CW on HF, but was also heard regularly on 2 meters FM. John was a valued member of the Mayo Radio Experimenters Network. He was club chairman from 2006 - 2009 and also served as treasurer in recent years. He also acted as the reader of the weekly IRTS News Bulletins on 2 meters on behalf of Mayo Radio Experimenters Network. He will be sadly missed by all his colleagues in the Club. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Kathleen, daughter, sons, brothers and sisters and his extended family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
ARRL and IARU President Emeritus Larry E. Price, Ph.D., W4RA, of Statesboro, Georgia, died September 10, 2019. He was 85. A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Larry was first licensed at age 16. He served four two-year terms as ARRL President, serving simultaneously as Secretary of the International Amateur Radio Union in 1989-1992 and continuing as IARU Secretary and ARRL International Affairs Vice President until his election as IARU President. Our sympathies go out to his family and friends at this time.
Counties Contests
A reminder for those listening to the news broadcast on Sunday morning that the 70cms Counties Contest runs from 2.00pm to 2.30pm local time today, followed immediately by the 2 metres Counties Contest, from 2.30pm to 4.00pm. Modes in use will be both FM and SSB, see www.irts.ie/contests for information about the permitted SSB frequencies, FM channels and other rules.
Cork Radio Club
Activities at Cork Radio Club will resume after a longer than usual summer break with the September monthly meeting in Carrigtwohill Community Centre on Wednesday the 18th at 8pm.
New and returning members will be very welcome and further information can be obtained by emailing “info /at/ corkradioclub /dot/ ie” or by telephone to 087-6290574.
The club meets on the third Wednesday each month in Carrigtwohill Community Centre.
Galway Digital Radio Group
A reminder that the Galway Digital Radio Group will be holding a Lecture in the UCG Innovation Centre on the 26th of September at 8pm. All are welcomed to attend. If you are interested in DMR, D-Star, and Yaesu Fusion their network will be covering these modes. The Galway Digital Radio Group are aiming this talk towards practical use rather than the technicalities of each mode. The group would recommend that anyone in the coverage area of the Galway Digital Network should attend. Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Clare, Westmeath, and possibly even Limerick
DX News
A group of Latvian amateurs will be active from Nauru from 16th – 25th September. They will use the callsign C21WW on 160 – 6m on CW, SSB, RTTY and FT8. QSL via Club Log OQRS.
The well-known DXpeditioner Istvan HA5AO will be QRV as 3DA0AO from the Kingdom of eSwatini (formerly Swaziland). Dates are 15th – 30th September and he will be on all bands 80 – 10m on CW, RTTY and FT8.
Following on from his time in eSwatini Istvan will travel on to Lesotho where he will reactivate his 7P8AO callsign from 1st – 19th October.
Harry JG7PSJ will be in Saipan in the Mariana Islands from 15th – 22nd September. He will operate from the Club station WH0RU and QSLs go via his home QTH.
