Silent Key
With deepest sympathies we announce the death of Benjy EI8EQ who in recent times has been living in Malta. He is predeceased by his XYL Betsy who passed away last year. Ben was an active member of South Dublin Radio Club when he lived in Ireland and will be missed by many. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this time. May he rest in peace.
Amateur Station Licence Examination
The next Amateur Station Licence Examination will be held on Thursday 14th November in the ComReg Offices in Dublin and at other centres if warranted by the numbers. Full details, including entry procedure, examination fee and how to pay the fee on line are available at www.irts.ie/exam
Please note that it is necessary to download the application form from the web page and forward the completed form and the appropriate fee so as to secure a place for the examination. If you pay the fee on line you must still complete and forward the application form.
The closing date for receipt of completed applications is Thursday, 31st October.
Limerick Clare Amateur Radio Club
LCARC members are preparing to participate in the International Lighthouse & Lightship event on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August. Currently, twelve members have indicated their participation at various times over the weekend. A core group of four members will attend over the entire weekend. As like other years the club will operate two stations - one from the Lighthouse and the second station from the Light Keepers building.
The Club Kenwood and Icom rigs along with antenna will be set up on Friday afternoon and taken down on Sunday afternoon. Members are welcome to bring their own rigs and/or antennas. The weekend offers SWLs and anyone with an interest in amateur radio an opportunity to see a station in operation.
Kerry Amateur Radio Group
EI-100-YXQ will be active on the air until the end of 2019 on all bands and modes. This is a special call to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the first East to West voice transmission across the Atlantic from Ballybunion to Louisberg, Cape Breton, NS. KARG welcomes any requests to air the call during this time, by prior arrangement with Declan EI9FVB.
Reminder that KARG will be QRV from Cromwell Point Lighthouse on ILLW weekend again this year for the 16th year in a row. All HF bands and modes will be in operation using two HF stations. Again they will be using the special call EI-100-YXQ. The event runs from 0001 UTC 17th August 2019 To 2400 UTC 18th August 2019.
DX News
The celebration of Market Reef having DXCC status for 50 years continues with OJ0O being active from 17th – 24th August. Further details can be found on the qrz.com page.
Gilberto IZ2DLV will be operating holiday style from the Maldives using the callsign 8Q7GB until 18th August. Look for him on SSB, CW and FT8.
A team of ZS operators will activate Robben Island again from August 15th- 20th. As before they will use the callsign ZS9V. The IOTA reference is AF-064. Look for them mainly on 10, 15 and 20m SSB. Robben Island is where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. QSL manager is M0OXO.
Mike RA1ALA plans to be QRV from Shokalsky Island (IOTA AS-083) using the callsign RA1ALA/9. Actual dates are uncertain but should be around 20th August. The island is a Nature Reserve and special permission has been received for landing there.
