IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday 10th February 2019


Silent Keys

This week we announce two silent keys. William Raitt and Sam Neal. William EI4IV passed away 13th January 2019. Sam N5AF who was a resident of Cleveland, Texas USA passed away 7th November 2018. IRTS extends its deepest sympathy at this time to their family and friends.


Licence Exam

The closing date for applications to sit the next Amateur Station Licence Examination exam is Thursday 25th April 2019. The exam itself will be held on Thursday 9th May 2019 in the ComReg offices in Dublin and at other centres if warranted by the numbers.

Places for exams at the ComReg Offices are limited, they are allocated on a first come first served basis and are only reserved on receipt of an application form and the examination fee.

To reserve a place, candidates should forward a completed application form to Joe Ryan EI7GY. See www.irts.ie/exam for Joe's contact details and other information about the exam.


IRTS Awards

The IRTS Awards Committee is seeking nominations for “Awards for Services to the Society or to Amateur Radio” and “Awards to IRTS members for Other Achievements”.

Details of these Awards are available at www.irts.ie under the Awards section.

Nominations should reach the Awards Manager Jim Holohan EI4HH, email “holohaj2 /at/ hotmail /dot/ com”, as soon as possible.


Last Year Prize Winners

Larry EI9CN has requested that any members who won prizes last year and who have not already returned them, please could they do so to a local committee member in time for them to be brought to the next committee meeting on the 2nd March, or they can be handed in to the IRTS stand at the Phoenix Amateur Radio Club Rally in Coolmine on February 17th. Larry hopes to pick them up at the March committee meeting, as he requires some time to have them engraved / repaired if necessary. If unable to return them via the above routes, members may also send them directly to his QTHR.


IRTS Committee

An opportunity to support amateur radio and to get involved in the work of the national society. There are several vacancies on the IRTS Committee for 2019/2020. 2 Meter News Reader

Reminder that the Dublin IRTS 2M news team is looking for a new volunteer newsreader for the Sunday morning FM news. Any IRTS members interested in joining this dedicated team should, in the first instance, contact Tony (EI5EM) by email at “ei5em /at/ eircom /dot/ net”


Assessment for CW

Assessment of CW will be carried out at Coolmine rally on February 17th, then there will be Limerick on March 10th and also at the IRTS AGM in Athlone on April 14th.

Booking for these tests is essential and intending candidates should contact Dave EI4BZ on 087-6290573 or by email “davebeag /at/ gmail /dot/ com”. Full details of the Morse test are available on the IRTS web site under licensing at www.irts.ie


South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

The 2019 AGM of the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will take place on Monday the 25th February 2019 in the Roanmore Social and Sports Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford at 8.00 p.m. sharp. As this is the AGM of the group all members are asked to please attend. New members or anyone interested in learning more about the group or amateur radio are as always very welcome to attend also.

IECRO Ireland Radio Club

The next training course to be run by the club, for anyone interested in becoming licensed, will begin on Saturday 23rd February 2019. To register a place on the course, contact can be made either by email “ireland /at/ iecro /dot/ com” or by submitting a support ticket online via https://support.iecro.com


Limerick Radio Club

The next meeting of the Limerick Radio Club will be the Club AGM and will be held, as usual, in the Limerick Institute of Technology starting at 7:30 PM on the 14th February. A good attendance is requested as there are some significant items up for discussion. Also a reminder that club membership fees are now due.

Please note that the weekly IRTS News continues to be read on the LRC 70cms repeater at 8:00 PM on Monday evenings.


DX News

A large multinational team are on the air until 18th February from Brunei using the callsign V84SAA. They will operate all bands with emphasis on the low bands. Look for them on CW, SSB and FT8. QSL via Club Log OQRS and logs will be uploaded to Logbook of The World.

Toru JE1STF will be active from Vietnam as 3W9CJ from 11th – 15th February. He will be on the HF bands on CW, SSB, RTTY and FT8 during his evening time.

Neil G0RNU will be in Jamaica from 12th – 26th February signing 6Y/G0RNU.

Shabu M0KRI is visiting Burundi from 15th – 26th February. He has been issued with the callsign 9U4RI and plans to be QRV on 40 – 10m using SSB and CW. QSL via Club Log OQRS.

A group of mainly German operators will be active from Kanton Island in Central Kiribati from 16th February – 5th March. Their callsign will be T31EU and they will be on 10 – 160m using CW, SSB, RTTY and FT8. QSL via Club Log OQRS.
