Additions to the Publications Library
Brendan EI7CS has supplied additional newsletters for our Publications Library. See www.irts.ie/library for a list of the new additions. One of these is the "IRTS News" for July 1948: present-day radio amateurs will find it interesting to read about the experiments being carried out by members almost 70 years ago, as well as the references to complaints about QSL practices; some things never change! Perhaps the write-up of National Field Day 1948 will spur more members to participate in the CW Field Day next weekend? Other IRTS newsletters added recently to the library are from the 1960s and 1970s, and they bring the total number of newsletters and call books available on the web site to more than 170.
Contest News
The results of the 40 Metres Counties Contest held on 7th May have now been published, see www.irts.ie/results for details. There was little or no short skip on 40 metres during the contest, so contacts within EI/GI were difficult. The 17 station logs submitted show that 35 EI/GI stations in 21 counties were active, however most of their QSOs were with overseas stations.
CW Field Day takes place over next weekend, starting at 15:00 UTC on Saturday 3rd June, and coincides with similar contests in many other IARU Region 1 countries. The contest runs for 24 hours, however members have the option of entering the Restricted Section by operating for no more than 6 hours of the contest period; operation need not be for one continuous 6-hour period, but once operation has commenced in the contest, off periods must be a minimum of 60 minutes. Amateur Station Licence Examination
The next Amateur Station Licence Examination will be held on Thursday 29th June in the ComReg Offices in Dublin. Some applications have already been received and as numbers are limited those intending to sit the examination should apply soon. Full details, including entry procedure, examination fee and how to pay the fee on line are available at www.irts.ie/exam .
Please note that it is necessary to download the application form from the web page and forward the completed form and the appropriate fee so as to secure a place for the examination.
It is also important to note that even If you pay the fee on-line you must still complete and forward the application form. The closing date for receipt of completed applications is Monday 12th June.
Four Exam Reports which were previously published in Echo Ireland are available on the Downloads section of the website at www.irts.ie/downloads under "Studying for the Harmonised Amateur Radio Examination Certificate". These reports contain very useful information for anyone studying for the Licence Examination. Intending candidates are advised to pay particular attention to the syllabus for the examination especially Annexes 1 and 2.
Tipperary Amateur Radio Group
The next meeting of the Tipperary Amateur Radio Group will take place in The Park Hotel, Clonmel on Thurssday 1st June at 8.30pm.
This meeting is open to all and Short Wave Listeners are in particular very welcome to attend. A number of radio related topics are up for discussion as well as a demonstration of DMR radio.
South Eastern Amateur Radio Group
The South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will for the 10th consecutive year take part in the Geoparks Communications weekend which takes place this year over the weekend of 3rd & 4th June to coincide with European Geoparks week. SEARG will be QRV as EI2GEO from the Copper Coast Geopark in Bunmahon County Waterford. For more information about EI2GEO and SEARG please see www.searg.ie
Irish Pirate Radio Museum
Ireland has a long and colourful pirate radio history dating back to the iconic events of 1916 and the world's first pirate radio broadcasts during the Easter Rising.
A meeting will take place upstairs at Branigan's pub just off O'Connell Street near the Pro Cathedral on June 7th 2017 beginning at 7pm. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss plans for a gallery exhibition or a permanent pirate radio museum, how the radio memorabilia should be collected, archived and curated and the most important question how it should be funded. Elettra Back on Air
A.R.I. Fidenza Radio Club (A.R.I. Italian Amateur Radio Association, IARU affiliated), will host the fifth year of a technical and cultural event at the seat of the Marconi Foundation in Bologna, Italy on Saturday and Sunday 3rd and 4th June 2017. The aim of the event is to celebrate the historical value of the yacht Elettra. The station will be QRV as IQ4FE and will be operated adjacent to the relict keel of the yacht Elettra. www.fgm.it
DX News
Tom KC0W is now QRV as Z25DX from Zimbabwe. He will be there until 18th June. This is a CW only expedition and QSLs go via the home call.
Henri OH3JR will be active as OJ0JR from Market Reef until 2nd June. Look for him on all bands 80m to 4m CW, SSB and RTTY.
A group of Scottish amateurs who are members of Stirling and District Amateur Radio Society will operate as HB0/GM4UYE from Liechtenstein from 1st to 6th June. QSL manager is M0OXO.
Thomas F4HPX will operate holiday style as FR/F4HPX from St Denis on Reunion Island from 4th to 16th June. He will use digital modes and possibly some CW.
IOTA chasers will be glad to hear that Vlad UA0FAM will be active from Kunashir Island (IOTA AS-025). He will use the callsign UA0FAM/P for one week starting on 29th May.
