Silent Key – Jim VE3EIA/EI9BD
The sudden and unexpected death has occurred of Jim Naughton VE3EIA/EI9BD in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Monday last 18th July 2016. Jim was originally from Ballina, County Mayo.
May he rest in peace.
The annual Islands On The Air contest takes place next weekend, for 24 hours from 12:00 UTC on Saturday 30th July. This is one of the most popular international contests among EI and GI stations. Among the announced operations for this year's contest, the Papa Lima DX Group have indicated that they will be operating from Little Saltee Island, off the Wexford coast, using the call sign EJ1Y (echo-juliet-one-yankee).
For IOTA chasers, this contest provides a great opportunity to work some new IOTA references, with the added attraction that credit for QSOs that are matched in uploaded IOTA Contest logs can be claimed without the need for QSL cards.
Results of this year's IRTS VHF/UHF Field Day contest have now been published. The Contest Results page at www.irts.ie/results has links to these results. Eleven contest logs were submitted, from operators in Cork, Mayo, Wexford, Louth and Wicklow. Although band conditions were generally flat, some good DX was worked: best DX was achieved by EI9E (echo-india-nine-echo) Network Southern Area Radio Experimenters Club, in a QSO with a Lithuanian station, LY1R.
North Cork Radio Group
NCRG will be holding this years annual rally on Sunday 28th August 2016 at The Commons Express Inn, Commons Road, Blackpool, Cork. Doors open at 11am and tickets are €5 per person, children under 16 years are free. There will also be raffle tickets on door. Delay has been due to venue confirmation and available dates. The Cable station that is situated in Hearts Content Newfoundland, Canada: this is the opposite end of the old Valentia - Newfoundland submarine cable.
Barry Harris VO1NC would like to set up a live link-up with Valentia on 10th September 2016.
The station does not necessarily need to be situated in Valentia Cable station or even on Valentia Island, however, it would be nice if it could be done.

South Eastern Amateur Radio Group
The South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will be QRV as EI2WRC/P from the Inistioge Vintage Rally, Inistioge, County Kilkenny on Sunday 31st July.
The Inistioge Vintage Rally is a great fun filled family day out with loads of vintage cars and engines from times gone past. Loads of things for all the kids too.

The July meeting of the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will take place in the Roanmore Social and Sports Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford tomorrow night Monday the 25th of July at 8.00 p.m. New members or anyone interested in learning more about amateur radio are very welcome to attend.

Al F6ACH will be active as FP/F6ACH from Miquelon Island off the coast of Canada until 30th July. He will probably concentrate on 20m running 100w to a dipole. IOTA reference is NA-032 and QSLs go via the home call.
A group of mainly Taiwanese and Japanese operators will be QRV from Kinmem Island (IOTA AS-102) from 29th July to 1st August. During the IOTA Contest (30st to 31st July) they will use the callsign BO0KS and at other times BW/homecall.
Nine Canadian amateurs will operate from CQ Zone 2 from 25th July to 1st August. They will have the special callsign VC2Q and plan to be on all bands CW, SSB and RTTY.
Mention was made in last week’s news of KC0W’s DXpedition to Tuvalu. He is now active as T2COW and will remain there until 18th August. He operates only CW and QSLs go to his home callsign.
Those who still need a contact with Minami Torishima (IOTA OC-073) should note that Take JG8NQJ will be there for the next couple of months using the call JG8NQJ/JD1. He works at the local weather station and on previous visits has been very active on the air during his spare time.
Dundalk Amateur Radio Society EI7DAR
Dundalk Amateur Radio Society have organised a Radio Shacks Photography Competition. As it is a photographic competition emphasis should be on a quality photograph. Any shack of any size is eligible.
You must email your photograph of no less than 1meg and no more than 3meg in jpeg format to myshack/ at/ ei7dar/dot/com.
A small monetary fee is required for entry and is payable on Paypal, this must accompany your submitted radio shack photo.
Winners will be announced at the 2017 IRTS AGM in Dundalk. Full details are on ei7dar.com
