IRTS AGM Dinner and Rally – 25th/26thApril-

Kilkenny 2015

Tickets for the IRTS AGM dinner, this year, held on Saturday 25th April at 7pm are now available from John Ronan EI7IG via email on irtsagm/at/searg/dot/com. The South Eastern Amateur Radio Group hosts this year’s event.

Tickets are available from IRTS regional representatives and also from David EI6GVB at the Phoenix Rally in Coolmine today Sunday 15th February.

The Rally will be on Sunday 26th with doors opening at 11am and admission is €5. The Trade Show will be geared towards a Radio, Electronics, Hobbies and Crafts Show so there should be something for everyone. All are welcome.


IRTS Committee

IRTS Region4 Radio Theory Classes

Radio Theory classes in preparation for the next Amateur Station license examination will be held in Limerick depending on numbers. The International Amateur Radio Club (IARC) of ITU

The International Amateur Radio Club (IARC) of ITU, 4U1ITU took part in the celebrations of World Radio Day, Friday 13th February which also marked the kick-off for the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union. The special call 4U0ITU (counts as ITU HQ, DXCC Entity code 117) will be inaugurated by the President of IARU Mr. Timothy S Ellam, VE6SH. IARC will be using the callsign 4U0ITU for the rest of 2015, until the World Radio Conference WRC-15, 2nd to 27th November 2015. All QSOs will be confirmed, QSL information can be found on QRZ.com

IRTS has been issued with the call sign EI150 ITU to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the International Telecommunication Union in 1865. It is essential that logs (preferably in ADI format) are kept when using the call sign and copies emailed to Dave EI6AL so that a central log can be held for QSL or other purposes. Anyone applying to use the call sign is considered to be undertaking to use it in accordance with the ComReg Regulations, Technical Conditions, Frequency allocations and Guidelines relating to amateur stations. South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

The South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will be continuing to have a 2m net on Tuesday nights after the IRTS weekly news has finished. This is to promote the use of the 2 metre band which has seen a decline in use. The intended frequency which will be used is 145.400MHz. Everyone is welcome to join in the net and get 2m an active band again.

The 2015 AGM of the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will take place in the Roanmore Social and Sports Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford on Monday 23rd February at 8pm sharp. All members are asked to attend and new members are always very welcome.

South Dublin Radio Club

Following on from the very interesting talk by Daniel EI9FHB about satellite antenna and rotator systems last week the club moves to the other end of our planet for a talk this Tuesday at 2000 by Terry Thomas ZL4TAE. Terry is a member of the Council of NZARTS, the New Zealand national society and he will talk about activities on 50 MHz and above in ZL. The club meets every Tuesday in Ballyroan Community Centre on Marian Road, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14.


Time to Return IRTS Trophies and Cups

Again, it’s that time of year to recall all the trophies and cups which were presented at last years AGM in Galway.

Items can be given to any IRTS committee member by March 25th, or if more convenient returned to the IRTS stand at the Phoenix Rally today Sunday February 15th, or at the very latest at the Limerick Rally on March 29th.

This will allow any cleaning, repairs and up to date engraving to be done.


DX News

Dom 3Z9DX is leading a team to operate from Cocos Island which is about 550km from the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The callsign will be TI9/3Z9DX and they should be on the air from about 16th to 23rd February. Operation will be on all bands 160 – 10m SSB, CW and RTTY. It is said that Cocos Island contains many tons of buried gold bullion from the old pirate days so operators will be able to do a bit of treasure hunting in their spare time!!!

Two German amateurs will be QRV from Kenya as 5Z4/DF3FS and 5Z4/DL9OLI from 16th February to 8th March. Activity will be on 80 – 10m SSB and CW. QSLs go via DF3FS.

John WX3P will be active from the island of Aruba until 19th February. He is using the callsign P40JP and QSLs go via his home call.

Yuki J H1NBN will operate as C21BN from the Pacific island of Nauru from 18th to 28th February. He will use SSB and QSL info is via his home call.

Henning OZ1BII will sign D44EE from the Cape Verde Islands from 19th to 24th February. This will be a CW only expedition. He will be operating from the D4A contest station so look out for strong signals.

Users of the ARRL Logbook of the World service who worked 5W0M Samoa will have received QSL confirmation of their QSOs this week.


ARRL Oral Histories First Entry

In the 18 January IRTS Radio News Bulletin we reported that the 'ARRL Library Goes Live. The Library is an online repository of educational presentations and oral histories that is a new feature of the ARRL website. One of the sections of the Online Library is 'Oral Histories,' and the 1999 Pat Kenny interview of Bernie O'Sullivan EI6AX is its very first posting. The full story of this interview and the men behind it is related in the next Echo Ireland, but you can listen to the interview now on ARRL.org/library-oral-history.
