IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday 17th August 2014


Silent Key John (JJ) EI6AH

We have learned of the death of John (JJ) O’Carroll, EI6AH, who passed away August 12th 2014 at the Bon Secours Hospital, Tralee. County Kerry. JJ was predeceased by his loving wife Mary and son Francis. He is survived by two children, four grandchildren, family and friends.

JJ had a long association with Amateur Radio he kept the memory of the Marconi Station in Ballybunion very much alive.

Funeral took place after 11am Mass on Thursday August 15th and burial took place at Killehenny Cemetary.

May he rest in peace.


IRTS 2m Contest 2014

IRTS 2m contest this year takes place on Sunday August 24th and the closing date for the submission of completed logs is September 7th. Full details are available on www.irts.ie/contests


IRTS SSB Field Day Contest

IRTS SSB Field Day Contest takes place on Saturday/Sunday 6th/7th September 2014. The latest day for the submission of logs is 21st September. Full details available from www.irts.ie/contests

The next edition of Echo Ireland is due for publication in September. Submissions and articles for publication are most welcome and the closing date is Friday August 15th. Please send to newsteam /at/ irts.ie

VHF/UHF Squares Table

The VHF/UHF squares table for 2014 runs from January - December inclusive. To date the only entrant to the Squares table is Tom EI4DQ. It is not too late to submit numbers to this table as these are updated on a monthly basis. We would be interested in squares worked on all VHF/UHF bands up to 10GHz. Please mail your squares listed by month to Steve EI5DD wrights1/at/eircom/dot/net


Kerry Amateur Radio Group

The Kerry Amateur Radio Group is pleased to announce that they have been issued with an additional callsign, EI1K. The club intend to use the callsign EI1K for contest operating, while our other callsign EI1KARG will continue to be used for club field day operations and special event stations. The Kerry Amateur Radio Group have a qrz.com page for the callsign EI1K where photographs of our various activities and details of our club can be found.


South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

The South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will be QRV as EI2WRC/P from the Kilkenny Motor Club Vintage Rally which takes place in St James’s Park (close to St. Luke’s Hospital) Kilkenny on Sunday 31st August (weather permitting). This is our 1st time in attendance at this event and we look forward to showing the hobby off to members of the public. We look forward to making some new friends and seeing our usual visitors too. Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford in 2014, celebrates its 1100th birthday. To commemorate and celebrate, SEARG will activate the special event call-sign EI1100WD until the end of the year from various locations. Activity will continue on various bands and modes (mainly HF) with the logbook for the station filling up rapidly and has already over 700 look ups on QRZ in just over a week. If you wish to get EI1100WD in the log, details will be posted on www.searg.com and also on the SEARG Facebook page.

The North Cork Radio Group will hold their 5th anniversary rally on Sunday, 7th September at the Commons Inn, Blackpool, Cork from 11am. NCRG have kindly agreed to permit us to place a donation box for The Southern Ireland Repeater Network at the event. The funds collected will go for the maintenance and up-keep of the network. Many thanks in advance for your generosity.

The August meeting of the SEARG will take place in the Roanmore Social and Sports Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford on Monday 25th August at 8.30 p.m. This meeting will be preceded by a committee at 8.00 p.m. sharp. Everyone welcome. Follow us on facebook and on twitter.


DX News

Several Spanish operators will operate as 5E7R from Rabat, Morocco from 21 – 24 August. This is a rare prefix and QSLs go via EB7DX.

Carlo ON4BR will be active as D44TLO from Boa Vista Island, Cape Verde until 23 August. Operation will be mainly CW on 40 – 10m. QSL to the home call.

Steve G3ZVW returns to Ascension Island from 21 -29 August. As before he will use mainly CW and his ZD8N callsign. Look for him in the evenings, early mornings and during the weekend.

A team of 7 Russian amateurs will be QRV as RI0X (Radio India Zero X-ray) from Karaginsky Island from 21 – 27 August. The island which is located in Zone 19 has the IOTA reference AS-064. QSL Manager is UA3AKO.

Jack AI4SV will be on a work assignment in Madagascar from the end of this month for a three year period. He has been issued with the callsign 5R8SV and plans to be QRV on the HF bands using mainly CW. QSLs go via G3SWH.
