Islands On The Air

The annual IOTA contest took place last weekend. Band conditions at the start of the contest on Saturday were poor, with almost no propagation on 10 metres (apart from some very sporadic E), so 15 metres and 20 metres carried much of the traffic during daylight hours on Saturday. Fortunately, propagation improved early on Sunday, so some good scores perhaps can be expected.

Along with plenty of mainland Irish stations, we heard stations in four Irish offshore islands participating in the contest. The Papa Lima DX-Group, which included Irish, Polish and French operators, was on Great Blasket Island and very much in demand, while members of the Shannon Basin Radio club and Galway Radio club were on Inisbofin. Two County Cork islands were on the air for the contest, Ger EI5KF was on Bere Island and the Cork Radio Club operated from above the North Harbour of Cape Clear.

Using special event call sign EJ5BPL, operators EI2KA, EI4JN and possibly others will operate from a tent next to the small lighthouse which, along with the Baltimore Beacon on the mainland opposite, marks safe entry into Baltimore Harbour from the North Atlantic. Weather permitting, activations will be every weekend and some other days during August and will include the ARLHS contest on 2-3 August, National Lighthouse Day (USA) on 7 August, and the ILLW weekend on 16-17 August. Barrack Point Lighthouse has been designated IE0014 by ILLW and IRE036 by ARLHS. An attractive QSL card will be sent to all stations worked.

The meteor scatter activity from IO41TU at Kilkeaveragh in Co. Kerry will be on 6m, 4m and 2m using primarily JT6M and FSK but also with SSB if tropo conditions warrant it.

This year the group will also take 23cm equipment to try moonbounce (EME) contacts as the degradation for EME signals is very low during this week.
