EI6IJ Fund in support of Affiliated Clubs

Each year, in order to promote Amateur Radio to the public, the IRTS Committee will consider the awarding of a number of grants to Affiliated Clubs. These grants will primarily be funded by a kind donation of the late John O’Riordan EI6IJ. The grants will be of around €300 and usually not exceeding a total of €1000 in any one year. These grants will assist with the holding of public special event stations by clubs affiliated to IRTS. The stations should have significant public exposure with the specific intention of demonstrating Amateur Radio to members of the public. The funds may be allocated in one or more grants, or not at all, depending on the nature of applications received.

Further information and terms and conditions are on the IRTS website at www.irts.ie/EI6IJ

EI9E/P VHF Contest Group Success

John EI2FG writes and tells us that EI9E/P made a clean sweep in the RSGB's VHF NFD contest.

In addition to being the leading station overall in the Open Section, EI9E/P was also the leading station in each of the five bands and is awarded no less than SIX certificates.

This success does not come overnight. For founding member Billy McLoughlin EI7FJ this was his thirtysecond consecutive VHF Field Day and it was icing on the cake to be triumphant in the RSGB's Centenary Contest. Details may be viewed on bit.ly/1gXBo0l

South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

The SEARG was invited by Waterford and Suir Valley Railway to take part in a recent event, held at Kilmeaden Railway Station as part of Kilmeaden Village Vintage Festival. The event turned out to be a great success with large crowds visiting the railway over the weekend. Club secretary Dennis EI2HSB proved to be a natural performer taking part in the entertainment. SEARG would like to thank Maria Kyte from the Waterford and Suir Valley Railway for inviting us to attend.

The South Eastern Amateur Radio Group activated Loftus Hall as CASHOTA ref: EI025/SH on Friday the 13th and Saturday the 14th of September. Band conditions were poor over the two days but a good few QSO’s were logged. Irelands most haunted house proved to be an excellent place to promote and show the hobby off to the general public. We had many visitors to the station over the two days. No one from the group had any encounters with the ghosts there, luckily everyone returned home normal. Many thanks to Aidan Quigley who gave us a warm welcome and plans are in place for a return visit to Loftus Hall.

The South Eastern Amateur Radio Group have been asked to take part in an event which runs from mid-October until the end of the year. We are looking to get some CW operators who would maybe be interested in getting involved in this project. If any CW operators out there would have a few hours to spare on any Saturday between now and Christmas and would like to help out please get in touch with Mark Wall EI7IS on 087 6302026 or Sean Byrne EI2HZB on 083 1379764. Even if you haven't used Morse in a while, this is an ideal opportunity to get back into practice as the code can be sent at any speed at the discretion of the operator.

All the members of SEARG would like to wish all the candidates sitting the license exam on the 10th of October the very best of luck. We look forward to hearing some new call signs on the air in the near future

The September meeting of the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will take place in the Roanmore Social and Sports Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford on Monday the 30th of September at 8.30 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by a committee meeting at 8.00 pm sharp and as always new members are very welcome. For up-to-date news about the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group and it’s actives you can check our website www.searg.com and you can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
