Silent Key

EI6Q Louis J Robinson, We are sad to have to report the passing of Louis J Robinson, who has been a long time Member of IRTS.

He will be sadly missed by his Family and Friends, May he rest in peace.


Theory Examination – Closing Date

The next Theory Examination for the Amateur Station Licence will be held on Wednesday, 7th July next at 2 p.m. in the ComReg Offices in Dublin and in Limerick at the Limerick Institute of Technology (Room 4B.05). Other centres may be made available where warranted by the numbers.

The closing date for receipt of applications to sit the examination is Wednesday, 23 June. See Theory Examination in the 'Information' section of the website and Studying for the Amateur Radio Examination in the Downloads section.


Increased Power for Contests

The Society is continuing to pursue with ComReg the question of securing increased power for the duration of contests on a list of international HF and VHF contests still to be finalised. In order to take this matter further, ComReg wish to have submitted a list of licensed amateurs who would be interested in getting permission to operate with increased power for the contests concerned.

Anyone who wishes to have their name included on this list should e mail the contest manager Thos Caffrey EI2JD at contestmanager /at/ irts.ie or to thoscaffrey /at/ hotmail.com


80m Counties Contest - Today

A reminder that the IRTS 80 metres counties contest takes place Today , 20th June, from 14:00 to 17:00 UTC.

Full rules for this contest are available at www.irts.ie/rules Note in particular the frequencies for this contest: CW 3.510-3.560 MHz; SSB 3.600-3.650 and 3.700-3.775 MHz

The IARU Region 1 Band Plan should be observed, and in addition: CW contacts should be made only in the recognised CW end of the band As this is a local contest, no operation should take place where the Band Plan indicates priority for intercontinental operation


CQ Help for Friedrichshafen

The Society will again have a stand this year at the Friedrichshafen Rally from 25th to 27th June. Anyone travelling to the rally that is willing to give a couple of hours to help staff the stand please contact Seán EI7CD on 01-2851599 or by e mail to ei7cd /at/ gofree.indigo.ie


EJ1DD QRV from Clare Island for IOTA Contest

Members of the Dalkey Island Contest Group are again travelling to Clare Island this year for the IOTA Contest which is scheduled for the weekend of 24-25 July. The callsign will be EJ1DD and the operators are Paul EI2CA, Peter EI7CC, Sean EI7CD, Seamus EI8BP, Ger EI8CC and Aiden EI8CE.

QSL Manager is EI7CC. For the IOTA Award the reference Number is EU-121 and for the Lighthouse enthusiasts the WLOTA reference is 1935.

There may be some activity by individual team members either side of the contest using their own calls with the EJ prefix. All contacts will be very welcome whether you are a contester or not.


Theory Classes in Clane

Michael EI2GKB who has run very successful classed in the South Dublin Radio Club intends to run classes for the Amateur Station Licence examination in Scoil Mhuire, Clane, Co. Kildare in the autumn. If you are interested please contact Michael on 087-2481970.


Magazine Collection-Free to good Home

There are approx 50 issues of Electronics Today from 1978 to 1981 Also approx 50 issues of Hobby Electronics, similar years and about 15 to 20 issues of Practical Electronics from 1979 and 1980.

There are also about 50 books and pamphlets on valves, transistors, TTL logic, etc the books are in the Dundrum area of Dublin

Recent Solarfest

The recent "Solarfest" at Dunsink Observatory included a lot of information on solar activity and sun spots. Peter Gallagher of TCD's physics department gave a demonstration of their Solar Monitor

website, www.solarmonitor.org/ This website has live and historical information on solar activity, including solar flare forecast information.


Portable Satellite Operation

Dave Ryan EI4HT / M0GIW will be operating /P on Satellite from the following locations over the next few weeks.

10th to the 29th of June from Pembroke Dock in the afternoons and from Rosslare Harbour in the evenings as passes allow. He will also be receive only when Maritime Mobile between Pembroke Dock and Rosslare Harbour each day as work allows.

During this time Dave hopes to also try some SSTV / P if anyone is about in the Wexford area. From 1st July to the 16th July Dave will be operating from Paphos in Cyprus from KM 64 ES.

Dave’s plan is to use Satellites AO51 & HO68 as the schedule allows. And APRS on ISS if active. Also APRS as nodes are available whilst out and about, Should be visible on www.aprs.fi as EI4HT-7


New Yahoo APRS Group

The primary goal of this new group is to try to encourage APRS activity in the Northern Counties. The group is open to all Country wide the Groups address is as follows.

Major Castles On The Air activation in Northern Ireland

Castles And Stately Homes On The Air in Northern Ireland will have a major activation on 16 July. Bobby, MI0RYL has obtained permission to activate both the Stormont Parliament Buildings and Stormont Castle within the Stormont estate in Belfast.

To commemorate this activation, a special QSL card will be issued to any contacts that are made. Propagation permitting, they hope to cover many bands and modes throughout the day to allow as many people as possible the opportunity to make contact.

The station should be up and running by 10am with the castle activation number GI022 and WAB No J37

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 23rd June at 7:30 in the Glebe National School.
