Amateur Radio Society celebrates 50th anniversary in
style.
The Royal Naval Amateur Radio Society was formed in 1960 and to celebrate the 50th anniversary a special callsign GB50RNARS is being aired by members of the Society throughout the year.
From the beginning of January, the call has been on air in various modes including CW, SSB, RTTY and data transmissions.
The bands used have been from 160 metres up to 23cms and up to now, over 1700 contacts have been made with stations as far away as VK. During the whole of April, the callsign will be used from the Bridge Wireless Office of HMS Belfast.
The Belgian and Netherlands Naval Radio societies are also running special anniversary callsigns this year. A special Anniversary award is available to listeners and licensed radio amateurs who hear or contact RNARS members and the specials event stations during 2010.
Full details can be found on the RNARS web site at: www.rnars.org.uk
Radio Sweden ends Medium and Short Wave
Radio Sweden will terminate its medium and short wave broadcasts this October 31st in favor of web services - with Swedish Radio management stating that is the best use of resources and in line with international trends.
The English-language service is to continue on the web and on national broadcasts. The Russian output will be available on the web, as is the German now.
K4T DXpedition success
The K4T DXpedition to Dry Tortugas proved a great success. They ran two amateur radio satellite stations; hopefully other DXpeditions will now consider running a satellite station.
They had a few glitches but it all worked out. They had ran two 910H's. One with yagis and one with egg beaters plus a portable station. It is hoped this sets a new standard for satellite operations on DXpeditions.
There ware two satellite stations, two HF stations, inverter, lighting and all acc running 24 hours a day all on green power for four days and made over 8,000 contacts with only batteries and a wind turbine.
It is also reported that the wind turbine was making so much power that the 900 watts of solar panels never seen outside of the case! The successful K4T Dry Tortugas operation may have been the first-ever major DXpedition to use only wind power.
