Theory Classes

Classes in Waterford will commence on Tuesday the 26th of September at 7.30 p.m. in the Roanmore Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford.

Classes are continuing with SDR every Tuesday between 8.00 p.m. and 10.00 p.m. in the Marian Community Centre, Marian Road, Tempelogue.

Theory and Mentors

The Society is running a series of advertisements in various publications, including Buy and Sell, over the next month. Members of the public interested in finding out more about Amateur Radio and the license exam are invited to contact the Society. Many of the inquiries will relate to exam courses. We would be grateful if clubs running, or intending to run, exam classes would contact Sean EI7CD or Paul EI2CA with details.

No doubt we will have inquiries from individuals in locations where there are no classes available. In these cases we would like to assign 'mentors' who can encourage and support those studying for the exam. With the new Course Guide available on CD for the student, the role of the mentor is really 'non technical' and within the capability of any licensed operator. In addition IRTS will provide a support service to mentors and indeed those running courses where this is requested. If you receive a request from the Society over the next few weeks to act as a mentor, please consider it seriously. You will be performing an important service, not just to the individual student, but also to the Society and amateur radio in general.

Once again we would ask Clubs to send us details of possible classes being formed for the coming session.

6 Metre IOTA Award

Dave, EI3IO has been informed by the RSGB IOTA checkpoint that he has qualified for the first VHF (6 metre) IOTA award to a station in the West European Isles (Anglo-Celtic Isles) with 100 island references. These comprise 59 island references from Europe, 10 from Africa, 5 from Asia, 20 from North America, 1 from Oceania and 5 from South America.

One of Dave's cards was rejected as an illegal 6 metre operation. This was for EU-187, Gavdos Island, which was an Italian expedition to SV9 prior to the 12th of May 2006 when for the first time non Greek, CEPT Class 1 licensees were authorised to use 4 and 6 metres in Greece. Dave's current worked island total on 6 metres is 108. The IOTA VHF award has similar rules to the HF award; however the qualification requirements are slightly lower, in that at least 1 contact should be made with each of 5 continents. Further IOTA information is available at www.rsgbiota.org
