IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday March 13th 2005
It is with great sympathy to announce that Florrie McCluney Wife of Don GI4MVQ passed away on the 4th of February last. May she rest in peace.
EI Activity Day
Listeners are reminded that next Thursday is St. Patrick's Day and you are asked to make a special effort to get on the air for the occasion. EI stations are always in demand and are especially so around our national feast day.
Do not confine your activities to the HF bands only; there are still lots of stations trying to achieve the Worked All Ireland Awards and the Worked EI Counties Award. Do have a go on 80 or 40 metres.
Also keep a listen out for the Cork Capital of Culture special callsign EI05CCC.
EI Counties Contest
Listeners are reminded that the Spring leg of the EI Counties Contest will take place on Easter Monday, the 28th of March between 2.00 and 4.00 p.m. Contest rules are in the IRTS Year Book.
Vintage Radio Museum
Tony, EI5EM has designed a new webpage for Ye Olde Hurdy Gurdy Vintage Radio Museum, located in the Martello tower in Howth. The new website has photographs of some of the technical and amusing exhibits from the Museum. The address of the new webpage is www.qsl.net/museum.html
The Museum is open on weekends from 11 until 4. If you are out for a drive or a walk in Howth, why not drop in. It is well worth a visit. The enthusiastic curator, Pat Herbert will be delighted to show you around. The contact telephone number is 086-8154189. It is hoped that from May next, the museum will be open every day until the end of summer. The museum deserves the support of everybody interested in the history of telecommunications, but particularly from radio amateurs.
Packet and APRS News
At approximately 22:00 hours on the 10th of March last, the Packet Node in Waterford Institute of Technology was upgraded to allow for future expansion. The node now operates as an AX25 and Netrom Node, a Packet to Internet Gateway and an APRS Internet Gateway. It is planned to continue to increase the functionality of the facilities offered by the Node over time. Many thanks to the Educational Services and Computer Services Department of Waterford Institute of Technology for their help.
Marconi Experimenter Group
The Marconi Experimenter Group has been formed in Galway by a group of experienced experimenters and communications professionals. More details and web site to follow soon. The groups' callsign is EI0MRG.
Cork ATV Group
The annual general meeting of the Cork ATV Group was held at Wilton Park House on Monday March 7th and the following were elected to office: Chairman is Aedan O'Meara EI3EG, Secretary is Fr. Finbarr Buckley EI1CS and Treasurer is Dave Moore EI4BZ.
Committee members are Jim Barry EI8GS, John Kelleher EI8HS, Stephen O'Leary EI6JA, Jeremy Sheehan EI5GM and Vincent Neff EI7HN. Subscriptions were set at €20.00 and can be paid to treasurer EI4BZ.
The repeater, located southwest of Cork City is fully functioning with a four screen split using a single Alfred slot antenna with a diplexer filter by ID-Elektronik of Germany. It is running 18 watts on 1300 MHz and the input is on 1245 MHz. Work is underway to forward link to both North and East Cork giving the potential of linking with both Limerick and Waterford.
It is also hoped in the near future to live stream other ATV repeaters.
The repeater is fully remote controlled from the QTH of EI3EG by means of a wireless LAN link. Enquiries to Aedan EI3EG or to any committee member.
Cork 70 cms repeater at Farmers cross
The cork 70 cms repeater on Channel RU72, 430.900 MHz now requires a 103.5 Hz CTCSS tone to access it. This has become a necessary change because of persistent intermittent interference being received at the site.
Slow CW Net
EI2JP has received several indications of interest in the QRS CW Net, which will be starting soon. All respondents have been sent an email questionnaire, which should be returned as soon as possible, so that a schedule can be formed. Experimenters wishing to participate are asked to contact Ron, EI2JP, by email at ei2jp at kerry dot com or by phone at 086-600-5499.
