Tipperary Amateur Radio Group

The Annual General Meeting of the Tipperary Amateur Radio Group will take place for members only on Monday the 10th of November 2003 in Raheen House Hotel, Raheen Road, Clonmel. Further information on the Group and its activities are available on the groups website at www.ei7trg.org


Amateur Radio Lecture

As part of Science Week Ireland 2003, there will be a lecture/demonstration, titled "HF Radio - Modes and Codes", by Colm, EI0CT, at 1900 hrs on Tuesday November the 11th next in the Hotel and Catering Theatre, Athlone Institute of Technology.


Special Event Station EI4LDF

The Bayside Scouts Radio Group, with the co-operation of Howth Martello Tower Heritage Group and Fingal County Council will set up a Special Event station at the Tower on Saturday and Sunday November 22/23rd.using the Callsign EI4LDF. The Station will commemorate the visit to the Howth Tower by American Inventor, Lee de Forest 100 years ago where he set up a Morse telegraph station and conducted 35 wpm Morse code transmissions to another similar station located across the Irish sea near the South Stack Lighthouse, Anglesey, North Wales.

On both days, the Tower will be open and offers an ideal opportunity for visitors to view the restoration work that has been completed inside.

Access to the Martello Tower that overlooks Howth Harbour is from Abbey Street or from Balscadden Road.

The Howth Heritage Group/Fingal County Council have accepted an offer of a private collector to have a permanent display of vintage telegraph and radios at the Tower and will be a new attraction at Howth for all radio enthusiasts when all is set up.

The Station EI4LDF will be on air on both Saturday and Sunday from approx. 11 am until 6 p.m. on HF CW and SSB also on 2 meters.


Jamboree on the Air

All Units and Groups participating in JOTA are asked to submit reports to their respective National JOTA organisers. These will be used in the National Reports to the WOSM in Geneva. Reports should if possible include photographs and press cuttings.


South Eastern Amateur Radio Group

At the last meeting of the club, international Scout Commissioner, Bernadette Rogers presented the club with a certificate in appreciation of their participation in JOTA. She also presented the group with a quantity of JOTA QSL cards.

Islands On The Air Contest

The results of the 2003 Islands On The Air contest held last July were announced earlier this week and fourteen EI stations appear on the listings. The claimed scores were published in the last Echo Ireland and following log checking there have been a few order changes in the results. The IRTS IOTA Trophy goes to EJ7M who operated from Bere Island with the runners up being EJ2SDR who operated from Innishbofin Island. The highest scoring EI single operator was Jim EI8GS while the highest finishing EI in any section was Fr. Niall EI4CF who was runner up in the 12 hour mixed low power section. The full scores will be published in the next issue of Echo Ireland, which will be available in early December. The full results are available on the RSGB HF contest committee's website.


DXpedition

The Five Star DXers Association, or FSDXA, has announced plans for a very large-scale DXpedition to Rodrigues Island in March and April next year. The callsign will be 3B9C. FSDXA - closely linked to Chiltern DX Club - is the group which organised the very successful 9M0C DXpedition to the Spratly Islands in 1998 and the subsequent record breaking D68C DXpedition to the Comoros in February 2001. An international team of nearly 30 will operate no fewer than 15 separate stations on virtually every band and mode possible - including SSB, CW, RTTY, PSK31, FM, satellites and possibly even EME - for nearly four weeks. Paul O'Kane EI5DI will be one of the operators. More news as it comes to hand.


Mayo Radio Experimenters Network

The 2nd Mayo will be held on Sunday November the 16th in the Belmont Hotel Knock, with doors open at 11.00. Over twenty traders have confirmed attendance including all the usual EI Traders, along with the many specialists which the Mayo rally seems to attract. These include PW, the leading independent radio magazine, with Rob Mannion the Editor available to meet readers. The club has also signed up a specialist dealer in new and used laptop computers, and two other computer dealers also confirmed.

This year Elekraft the US based manufacturer of HF kit-radios will be showing their products, and many builders of these radios will be on hand to discuss the kit building process with potential purchasers. Declan Craig EI6FR will be giving a presentation on DXpeditioning, and Brendan Minish EI6IZ will be making a presentation on PLC - power line communications.

The famous range of aluminium tubing - one of the talking points of last year's Mayo rally, will be available again this year, and a specialist supplier of valve & vintage radios is also confirmed. The club is also pleased to once again present Amateur Television amongst the exhibitors, and visitors may find the talk-in on two metres, 145.550 useful.

The location of the rally hasn't changed with breakfast and lunch available at the Belmont Hotel, along with accommodation at keen rates for rally goers.

The club has arranged a dinner in the hotel, for anyone travelling to Knock on the Saturday.
