Proposed Amateur Band

The RSGB are proposing a new amateur band between 495 and 505 kHz, this is at the lower end of the AM broadcast band. It was noted that monitoring of the International distress and calling frequency, 500 kHz ceased in many parts of the world at the end of 1997. The allocation of spectrum around this frequency would allow amateurs to experiment with sky wave propagation that ceased during the 1920's when the frequency was allocated to Maritime communications which used ground wave propagation.

Digital Radio Mondiale

Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is a project aimed at revitalising the short-wave, medium-wave and long-wave broadcast bands. This is achieved by using digital signals to provide to provide listening quality close to that of FM broadcast. Radio amateurs and shortwave listeners can become part of the DRM Software Radio Project. They may also be among the first to access the initial DRM programs when test transmissions begin in the near future.

The project works by adding an extra down-converter board to existing receivers and using the DRM software to decode the signal via a PC soundcard. Radio amateurs and shortwave listners wishing to get involved in the project should visit www.drmrx.org
