IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday August 4th 2002
Silent Key
It is with deep regret we announce the passing of Eugene (Gene) Larkin of Dunaghmore Dundalk Co. Louth. Gene was well known and respected in all aspects of radio experimentation for many years, and will be sorely missed by his many friends in radio throughout Ireland and across the world.
Having been a skilled toolmaker in his early days he was adept in home construction and loved the old values of radio, he always maintained a 4 Meter AM station, which he worked side by side with his more modern equipment.
Eugene was also well known and respected in equestrian circles.
Funeral mass on Tuesday 29th July, in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dundalk, was con-celebrated by his good friend, Rev. Pat Kelly EI5DA. Eugene was a lifetime member of the Dundalk Amateur Radio Society, and held the position of President until his Death.
A large gathering of mourners attended the burial in Dowdalls Hill Cemetery following the Requiem Mass. Many of Genes older colleagues commiserated with the family, these included Mike Babe EI4CG, Sean Taafe EI0CP, Kieran Daly EI9DA, and Tom Mc Dermott EI9CJ.
Sympathies and a floral tribute on behalf of Dundalk Society was presented by Chairman, Thos. Cafferey EI2JD. Sympathies and a floral Tribute on behalf of IRTS was presented by Peter Grant EI4HX.
The bereaved family include His Wife, Sons and Grandchildren. May he rest in peace.
Scout Special Events
As part of the 75th Anniversary of the founding of Scouting Ireland - CSI, a number of micro jamboree camps are taking place around Ireland until Saturday the 10th of August. Special event stations will be operational during the camps and are as follows; EI7SLH Larch Hill, Co. Dublin. EI7SMM Mount Mellary, Co. Waterford. EI7SKC Kilcully, Co. Cork.
Stations will be QRV on or around the Scout Frequencies which are; 3.740 MHz, 7.090 MHz, 14.290 MHz, 18.140 MHz, 21.360 MHz, 24.960 MHz and 28.390 MHz.
Note also that the 45th Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) will take place on the 19th and 20th of October.
Slide Rule and Abacus Exhibition
A Slide Rule and Abacus Exhibition will be held at the ILAC Dublin Central Library during August 2002. The exhibit includes, Slide Rules, of various ages and functions, Chinese and Japanese Abacuses, a set of Napier's Bones (an early form of calculator not Napier's relics!) various mechanical Calculators and Calculating aids.
The exhibition is educational, and is meant to show a younger generation how calculation was performed prior to the electronic age. Many of the older Radio Amateurs, will have used some of these items, so there is a nostalgia element to the exhibition also.
The Exhibition is by kind permission of the Open Learning Centre at ILAC in association with Dublin Corporation.
The Content is provided by Liam EI9DVB. The Exhibition started on Saturday the 27th of July 2002 and ends Saturday the 7th of September 2002.
XE1/EI7GK
Paddy EI7GK is currently QRV from Mexico and reports that conditions between XE and EI on 20 metres are best early morning Irish time around 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. If anyone is on air at those times listen out for him around 14.268 MHz. He has put up a 2-element wire beam and gets good reports from Europe.
IRTS Contest News
Congratulations to Joe Ryan EI7GY who won the Restricted Section in the recent CW Field day. Joe operated portable from Knockadreet, Co. Wicklow and had 223 QSO's making a total of 801 points. Congratulations also the EI9E group who won the open section operating portable from Murrintown, Co. Wexford. Operators on the team were Dave EI4BZ, Billy EI7FJ and Mick EI6GF, their score was 1506 points from 456 QSO's.
VHF/UHF Field Day
Participants in the UHF/VHF field day are reminded that the closing date for submission of logs is Tuesday 6th of August. All logs must be postmarked or emailed by this date. Paper logs should be sent to The Contest Manager, IRTS, PO Box 462, Dublin 9. Electronic logs should be sent to contests@irts.ie or ei2jc@hotmail.com.
IRTS HF SSB Field Day
Groups intending to participate in the IRTS HF SSB FIELD DAY which takes place on 7th and 8th September are asked to note RULE 2 of the SSB field day rules which requires details of the site to be notified to the Contest Manager, not later than 30 days before the contest Date. Deadline for notification is the 9th of August. Details of site should be posted to Noel Walsh EI2JC, Contest Manager IRTS, PO Box 462, Dublin 9. Late entries may be accepted not later than 24 hours before the contest, late entries should be emailed to contests@irts.ie or ei2jc@hotmail.com.

Four French operators are in Benin and active as TY7Z, TY9F, TY4DX and TY6FB until the 14th of August.
Upcoming Events
The International Lighthouse / Lightship weekend will take place on the weekend of the 17th and 18th of August 2002.
The Cork Radio Club Rally will take place on the 29th of September in the Blarney Park Hotel. For information, contact Con EI7DJB or Dick at 021-4545154.
South Eastern Amateur Radio Group
The club has now gone in to Summer recess, so there will be no more general meetings for the remainder of the summer. General meetings of South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will resume on Wednesday the 25th of September at 8.00 p.m. Committee members are reminded that committee meetings will continue as usual on the first Wednesday of each month, the next committee meeting being at 8.00 p.m. on Wednesday the 7th of August at the usual venue of the Roanmore Social and Sports Club.
