Leonids Meteor Shower

Next Sunday, the 18th of November, those interested in VHF DX should keep an eye on the bands. The Leonids meteor shower will peak around 1000 utc next Sunday morning. Some experts are predicting that this could be a spectacular 'meteor storm', though of course at that time of the morning little will be visible. Instead tune into 144.200, point the beam towards the south east and listen to the 'reflections' of the meteor trails. Signals from all over Europe should be heard for seconds or even minutes at a time. Some reflections are long enough to have a complete QSO. If you want to participate in the action, be sure to read up on the correct procedures which differ from usual operating practice, otherwise you may cause confusion to other stations. These meteor procedures can be found on any of the big VHF web sites. 50 and 70 MHz are also excellent bands for meteor scatter operation, and the reflections here are even longer than on two meters.
