IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday July 29th 2001
Meteor Scatter
This year G4XUM, GD0TEP and others will travel to Ireland to activate IO54 and IO55 during the perseids meteor shower. The main operation will be from Rockview, Co. Sligo in IO54UB, but a trip will be made to a suitable location in IO55 during the 11th and 12th of August for the peak of the meteor shower.
Four metre operators, please note that this is a very rare opportunity to work these two squares during the Perseids on SSB meteor scatter. The group will only operate 4 metres if there is enough interest. Please contact Martin, G4XUM, at g4xum@qsl.net. They would like to work Meteor Scatter with any EI stations. DX
Paddy EI7GK will be QRV from Salzburg, Austria until August the 4th. He will be on 14.268 and 21.268MHz SSB and will be keen to work any EI or GI/MI stations.
Staying with DX. Jim Martin MM0BQI will be active as GB5SI on Dxpedition to EU92, the island of Tanera Mor in the Summer Isles, North West Scotland until the 3rd of August 2001 including IOTA contest entry. The various references are; IOTA EU92, Islands of Scotland Award SC10, WAB NB90 and QRA IO78. Activity will be on all bands 6 - 80m SSB, CW, RTTY and PSK31. Hopefully this year conditions will be better the operators look forward to working lots of stations who require the Summer Isles for IOTA or IOSA. Jim will be using the special call GB5SI (Summer Isles) and his own call MM0BQI/P. He hopes to work many EI stations during the week. South Dublin Radio Club
The regular Tuesday night meetings of South Dublin Radio Club will not be held on 7th or 14th of August, as the club QTH will be closed for holidays. However club meetings will be held during the second half of August - that is on 21st and 28th August.
Planning Problems
Reports of experimenters running onto trouble with their local planning authorities have become more common of late. If you have had an experience in this area please write a short report and forward it to EI4BZ at QTHR or e-mail to ei4bz@eircom.net. It may be of help to others in similar situations.
Aeronautical Mobile
A restored Pan American Airways Boeing B-307 Stratoclipper with amateur radio aboard will take off next week from Seattle. A group of retirees from PanAm and Boeing, and some current Boeing workers, radio amateurs among them, restored the antique aircraft to flight worthiness. Chuck Driskell,W7ZIR, will conduct an in-flight special event operation on HF as the plane heads for the Experimental Aircraft Association Fly-In in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
The plane "Flying Cloud", NC 19903 was due to start it?s multi-hop flight to Oshkosh on July the 23rd and arriving in Oshkosh the next day. The return flight is scheduled to take off July 30th or 31st. Driskell is expected to be on the air during the return trip as well. He expects to operate CW on or around 3.545, 3.680, 7.040, 7.050 and 7.060 MHz, and AM on or about 3.875, 3.885, 7.285 and 7.290 MHz. The aircraft's 75 Watt transmitter feeds a fixed antenna mounted on a mast above the radio position and extending back to the aircraft's tail.
The plane is owned by the Smithsonian Institution and will eventually be displayed at the new museum facility at Dulles Airport in Virginia. For more information, contact Ralph Conly,
Theory Exams
Theory exams for the class B licence will take place in Waterford on Thursday the 2nd of August 2001 at 2pm in the Roanmore Social and Sports Centre,Cleaboy Road, Waterford. The candidates to sit the exam are from Cork Radio Club and South Eastern Amateur Radio Group. Those sitting the exam are asked to bring photo identification with them such as drivers licence of passport. The fee is £20.
