IRTS Radio News Bulletin Sunday June 18th 2000
News from Mayo
This weekend's planned trip by the Mayo Group to activate the Islands in Clew Bay is postponed due to low tides. The expedition is now provisionally planned for the next Saturday, 24th June, subject to availability of boats. This cannot be confirmed until Tuesday next.
The June meeting of the Mayo REN were treated to a working demonstration on the new digital mode PSK 31 by John Corless EI7IQ. The club station EI7MRE made several contacts using this mode. Afterwards John gave a talk on PSK and demonstrated how to set up a station.
Representatives of the Scouts attended the meeting and plans are underway to assist the Mayo scouts for JOTA, later in the year.
The club is also supporting the Cross Border Cycling event this weekend by providing radio back-up.
Padraic Baynes EI6FWB, demonstrated a new portable HF antenna which can be assembled in seconds. The antenna was also used for the PSK demonstration.
Congratulations were extended to Brendan Minish on his recent success in the CW examination. Brendan is awaiting a callsign, and is likely to have one of the last "I" series calls.
The meeting ended with the premier of "Dayton 2000", the unofficial video of this year's Hamvention.
The July meeting of the club will be held on Wed the 5th at the Wishing Well in Ballyvary and final plans will be made for the club's entry in this year's IOTA contest.
Cork Radio Club
IRTS President Dave Moore EI4BZ was the guest at last Monday’s meeting of the Cork Radio Club. Dave brought the members up to date on the activities of the IRTS committee and he gained valuable feedback on matters of interest to the large attendance.
A display of amateur television was running with an excellent picture being received at the clubhouse from the Cork ATV repeater.
This year, the Cork club is celebrating its 25th anniversary and will be holding a function later in the year to mark the occasion.
The club shack has being upgraded and EI5CRC is on the air every Monday night working towards the Millennium DXCC. The club meets at Wilton Park House every Monday night and visitors are always welcome.
IRTS Publications
With immediate effect, Kevin O’Herlihy EI7IM will no longer be involved with IRTS publications.
The IRTS committee wishes to express its thanks to Kevin for his great work on Echo Ireland over the past few years.
For the time being, input for the Newsletter should be sent to Dave EI4BZ. The deadline for the next issue is Friday next the 23rd.
The year book will be produced over the coming months and callsign or address changes should be notified to Joe Ryan EI7GY as soon as possible.
Clubs are asked to forward their details to Sean Donelan EI4GK.
South Eastern Amateur Radio Group
The next general meeting of the South Eastern Amateur Radio Group will take place on Wednesday the 28th of June at 8.00pm in the Roanmore Social and Sports Centre, Cleaboy Road, Waterford.
The guest at the meeting will be IRTS President, Dave Moore, EI4BZ who will address the meeting on a number of amateur radio topics.

WestNet on Inishmaan The WestNet/Saltee Dog DX Group will be active from Inishmaan in the Aran Island Group from Thursday next June 22nd to the 26th inclusive.
The callsign will be EJ7NET and QSLs go to Declan EI6FR.
The Aran Islands are EU-006 for the Islands On The Air programme.
Contests
The two biggest contests coming up are the IARU HF Championships on July 8th and 9th and the Islands on the Air on July the 29th and 30th.
The World Radio Team Championships are being held in Slovenia in conjunction with the HF Championships and the cream of the world’s contesters will compete with similar stations from Slovenia. There are several awards available for working these stations.
Several EI groups are planning island trips for the IOTA contest and there are three IRTS awards available, one for the best EI single operator score, one for the best score in the 12 hour CW section and one for the leading EJ entry. We will have more details on both of these nearer the events.
Dates for your Diary
The VHF/UHF Field Day will be held on the 1st and 2nd of July.
The International Lighthouse/Lightship Weekend will be held on August 19th and 20th. Information from Mike GM4SUC at gm4suc@compuserve.com The Marino Institute of Education in Dublin will host Celticon 2000 – a QRP Radio Convention on September 1st to 3rd next.

The Cork Rally will be held in the Blarney Park Hotel on Sunday September the 17th.
