IRTS Field Days

The Society runs three field days during the year. They all tie in with IARU Region One events and are held as follows: CW on the first full weekend in June, VHF/UHF on the first full weekend in July and SSB on the first full weekend in September.

Participation in the 1999 Field Days was down on previous years with the following results;

There were only two entries in the CW field day, EI7M in the open section and EI7GY in the restricted section.

In the VHF/UHF Field Day the Tipperary Radio Group EI7TRG were the winners of the restricted section with the Mayo Group EI7MRE taking the runners up spot.

The open section was won by the East Cork Group EI7M.

There were only two valid entries in the SSB Field Day, the East Cork Group EI7M in the open section and the Mayo Group EI7MRE in the restricted section.

Unfortunately, both the VHF and SSB field days had entrants who were in breach of rule 3.4 of the IRTS General Contest rules and were treated as check logs. This rule states that all participants as listed on the entry sheet must be Society members.

Two satellites with amateur radio capability and one dedicated amateur satellite were successfully launched from the Vandenberg Air Force base in California during the last week in January . They were on board an Air Force Minotaur rocket which lifted of on schedule on January the 26th.The amateur satellite is a tiny eight ounce StenSat developed by a group of amateurs in the Washington DC area as part of the Stanford University’s OPAL project.

It will operate as a single channel Mode J FM voice repeater, uplinking on 145.84 MHz and downlinking on 436.625MHz.

The long running Phase 3D saga advances another stage with the transportation of the satellite to the launch site in Kourou, French Guiana. A launch contract with Arianspace accepting Phase 3D as a payload on the first suitable Ariane 5 launch vehicle was signed last October and hopes are high that the launch will take place during the middle months of the current year.
